Globe 5.80 Transat 2026

The Globe 5.80 Transat is a race across the Atlantic in 5.8m boats which are home-built to a ‘one class design’. All boats are built of plywood to a solid design, which is now well tested in previous races.

Previously, the race has been a solo race, however, this year sees the advent of a double-handed race class. However, Dean remains keen to take up the challenge of sailing solo; he will follow in the wake of the sailors who completed the inaugural Mini Globe Race in 2025/26.

The prologue race sails from Lagos, Portugal, in late October 2026. The prologue race heads to the south of Lanzarote, and acts as the qualifier for the transatlantic race. And after final checks and victualling, the main race will begin from Rubicon Marina, and then head 3,600 miles west to Falmouth Harbour, Antigua.

This race is the brainchild of Don McIntyre, who also took part in the 2021 Transat in 2021. Don has created races for ‘ordinary’ sailors to compete in around the world races; Golden Globe Race – a non-stop single-handed race around the Capes, the Ocean Globe Race – a crewed race emulating the first Whitbread, again around the Capes with 3 stop-overs and the most recently finished Mini Globe Race – solo racing around the world with many beautiful stop-overs, through blue waters and around the Cape of Good Hope.
